The Un-Rumerated news of it all
Current mood: blessed
Category: Music
Work on the new cd project "Katherine Dawn Davis 25 All in Texas" has been reflective and inspirational. It's been a re-lesson in my roots hearing every recording we could get our hands on. My dear friend and mentor Big Bill Lister has to be one of if not the most influential energies in my career.
I recently spent some more time with him and have to say I can only hope to be as positive and productive with the music in my life as he is and has been. He just turned eighty six years old and celebrated his birthday in Llano TX with family and friends. Jett Williams (Hank William Sr.'s daughter) celebrated with him showing up at the party to pick and sing. Her birthday is just days between Bill's and the two had a great time amongst all the love and appreciation.

The Biggest news about Big Bill for me lately is the guitar that he MADE. It plays and sounds better than most I've ever experienced. Watch out Martin, Taylor, Gibson The Lister Git Box could be moving in on your action. Really though I put one in for order. Wishful thinking. What I'd really like to do is order a kit and make it WITH HIM. We shared alot of stories and theories as always.

I can't wait to record some Big Bill Songs and that is in the works. His nephew Dave Kirby (God Rest his soul ) who wrote "Is anybody going to San Antone" encouraged me as a young pre-teen. If what I know now I would have understood then wow...I would have asked him what it was like to have Charley Pride record one of your songs. Then I could have asked Doug Sahm (God rest his soul) what it was like to record a Dave Kirby song recorded by Charley Pride.

So I bring that up because Bill and I were talking about my latest project and of course what was next after that. I spoke of my desire to pay homage and tribute to all of the writers, and artists that have given me so much. He told me years ago that "A hit song doesn't care who sings it." I've lived and learned that to be true. It's making moments and memories such as these that shape us as people and artists. I met Bill when I was twelve yrs old and I thank the good Lord for that gift of love and friendship. I don't want to start going on to much about Bill because I don't ever know when to stop. Ladybug loves her Big Bill. But I will keep you posted about his amazing and interesting acts of kindness and talent.

I know I'm not the only one. If you relate to this blog with a mentor or artist of yours please share it with me and the world at large. It's all about passing it on without any credit. The rewards are infinite and deeper than earth bound souls can comprehend, (in my opinion). Oh by the way you can read about Big Bill and some of my other talented friends in San Antonio Living Magazine the March issue 2009. www.bigbilllister.com He's also a great name to search for at www.youtube.com

Well I'll be playing twice March 14,2009 at the Illuminaria festival in San Antonio, TX. I'll be playing a solo set for the Texas Music Coalition showcase that afternoon and then I'll be backing up my sweet music sister Ashlee Rose that night. Playing bass guitar/back up vocals in the Ashlee Rose Band has been such a learning curve and I'm having a blast. She inspires me and It's so exciting to hear her cover alot of my songs. The new songs coming out of this talented young lady are just well...GREAT. Hey she even got her own slot at Sea World this year in San Antonio, TX "Ashlee Rose Unplugged." www.myspace.com/ashleerosemusic

My rodeo songwriter sweet heart Bailey Renee has been burnin and turnin the barrels as of late but still turning out the music. She recently shared some mic time with me at the Houston St. Fair in San Antonio, TX. and sounded beautiful. A CD is in the works for her and she will be covering a song of mine called "Perdy Inside" we have also co-wrote some tunes. One can only anticipate the songs written by Bailey and her dad Troy Zoeller to be recorded.

Well I can expose now that there are 25 tracks on the new project. Starting February 17, (my birthday) 1979 with a live recording in Comfort TX at the Hill Country Opry. A regular show I did with Big Bill Lister, Tennessee Valley Authority, Salt Lick and many others. It started out as a Benefit to relieve Flood Victims and just kept on going. We had a great run of it. The project runs the gambit of live and studio recordings from 1979-2005. I will also include some recording of choice cover tunes that have become signature and favorites with my fans.
I would have loved to put some recordings on the project from my second band "Cypress" with Clay Meyers, Weldon Lister, Tami Wise, Robert Adams, and Wade Jacoby, but have yet to locate any, it's the same with the band Carousel. But, the single that I recorded with Producer Smokey Montgomery in Dallas, TX 1982 will be included and that was a song "It doesn't matter to Me" co-written with Carousel band members Jeff and Jerry Doyle. The flip side is a song written by Carousel Band member Larry Nolan Jr.

The CD will be finished out with a few of the recordings from the 2004-2005 sessions I did with Bobby Flores producing at BGM studios in San Antonio, TX with Mr. Bill Green engineering.
I must mention that if not for all of the hours of recording, refurbishing, engineering, and literally saving these recordings by David Helms of Rough Diamond Productions I doubt it could have ever been possible. Thank you Mr. Helms.

Credits on this project will just have to be listed in alphabetical order and that unto itself will be very interesting to fans of Texas Music. Most of these fine musicians are still turning out the sounds and are huge talents to be reckoned with then and now. Just put their names in search and you'll find out for yourself.

Why am I doing this? Because it's a collection of me the ladybug, the songbird, the little gal from Texas with the Big voice. My pockets have not yet been deep enough along this journey thus far to totally invest the million or two it requires to actually launch yourself, as do major label artists. So far for whatever reason the universe and my own inconsideration and self punishment have kept me from making unwavering independent progress and recording and release to be as successful music wise as alot of my friends and peers. But as Willie Nelson told me and others..."Even if you played your music in the middle of nowhere... just play because if it's good the world will beat a pathway to your door to hear it."
As most will agree with you it's always been about being in the right place at the right time, with the right song, and the right everything...in other words LUCK. That is after alot of hard work and even more faith.
I'm somewhat of the Forest Gump of Texas Music and proud of who I am today. So the reason I'm doing this project is because, well, it's just plain interesting to me and I hope it will entertain and spark the interest and inspiration of others. I'm just trying to pass it on as I have always promised.

The release of this project will be a homage and closure to what was and I just can't wait to discover what's next on my Huge Plate of a life making and sharing the music in my life. EST of release for this project is the summer of 2009 if not sooner.

I would love to hear from any of you that have an interesting story to share, any recordings or pictures of memories of the musical times of the past. I've already had some people get in touch and tell me about seeing me perform and I always get asked by ole' school chums..."Hey are you still singing?" Hmmm? Guess they don't get out much anymore."

Hey, thanks for taking the time to read this, if not for the interested we would never be interesting. Blessings, Katherine Dawn Davis
